Resume Tips

The resume is a tool with one specific purpose: to win an interview. A great resume doesn't just tell the employer what you have done but makes the same assertion that all good ads do: If you buy this product, you will get these specific, direct benefits. Think of yourself as the product, potential employers as your customers, and your resume as a brochure about you.

Your resume is a reflection of you. Make sure that it gives an accurate, factual portrayal of your skills and abilities. The following are a few tips that may be helpful as you prepare your resume:

Identifying Information
Include your name, address, phone and email address. For college students, include your permanent address.

Objective
The objective is not required on the resume but can be included. You could also include it in your cover letter. Include a brief, specific statement indicating what career or job you are interested in.

Education
List your College/University and location, degree, major, month and year of graduation or expected graduation date. Do not include your high school graduation information. Include your GPA if it is 3.0 or higher.

Employment
List your most recent work experience first. Include the name of the company and location, job title, dates employed, and a bulleted summary of your responsibilities and achievements. For your most recent experience, include no more than five bullets and no more than three bullets for every other position. Be consistent with your formatting of each job.

Qualifications or Skills
Include computer knowledge, language fluency, machine or related skills. Also list any recent industry related honors or activities.

References
List three references. Provide the name, title, address, phone number and their relationship to you. Include at the bottom of the resume or on a separate page.
