Interview Reminders

Interviews are a time for the employer to meet you and see what kind of potential you have. You need to create a good first impression and stay a step ahead of the interviewer. The following are a few tips that may be helpful as you prepare for your interview:

Before the Interview
Research the company. Know the history, the CEO and the goals of the company. If you are interviewing for a specific job opening, make sure you read the job description. Know what the qualifications and job duties entail. Visit the website.

Present yourself in a professional manner. Dress appropriately and make sure you are properly groomed. Bring a professional looking notebook or briefcase to carry copies of your resume, a notebook and pen.

Arrive at least 10 to 15 minutes early. Make sure you know how to get to the company so you do not add unnecessary stress to your day. Factor in rush-hour traffic and unexpected events that could add additional time to your commute. If you have to wait a few minutes for the interviewer, look over some of the reading materials in the waiting room.

During the Interview
Relax. Take a breath, go to the bathroom, and compose yourself. When you meet the interviewer, shake with a firm, confident handshake. Sit with a straight posture and pay attention. Be prepared to sell yourself. Create a 60-second commercial that should include: an introduction of yourself with a copy of your resume, your objective - why are you there and what sort of employment are you seeking, a brief summary of your education and recent experience and what you have to offer the company.

Be prepared to answer questions from the interviewer. Take a few seconds to think about how you will respond. Speak clearly and give examples in your response. When the interviewer asks if you have any questions.you'd better! Think of some questions beforehand.

After the Interview
Write a thank you note immediately. A personalized hand-written note is nice, but an emailed note is delivered quicker. Express your interest in the company and the job. Make an effort to stay in touch by emailing, writing or phoning the interviewer. If this job falls through, continue to stay in touch with your contact and remind them of your interest in the company and to keep you in mind for future openings. Be careful not to phone or contact the interviewer too often.
